The City of Dubuque, Iowa (population 58,000) invites applications for the position of Building Services Manager.

The successful candidate will be responsible for administering, enforcing, interpreting and providing outreach and education regarding the city’s building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and ADA codes and ordinances.  Work also will involve responsibility for facility maintenance by administering and supervising the day to day operations and all capital improvement projects for City Hall, City Hall Annex, Multicultural Family Center and the Historic Federal Building.

  Supervision is exercised over a staff of inspectors, permit clerk, maintenance supervisor and custodial staff.  The successful candidate will possess progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience in all phases of building design, construction and inspection; graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in structural engineering, architecture, construction technology or related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.  The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to follow a management style that is input oriented and values problem solving and the development of partnerships and a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and teamwork.

The City offers an annual salary range of $71,697 to $93,724, and an attractive benefit package.

The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for the full-time position of Combination Inspector I in the Planning and Building department. Duties include:

  • Makes detailed inspections and investigations of residential building construction, and remodeling and zoning matters for which a permit is required to determine compliance with applicable building and zoning regulations as well plumbing, heating and electrical installations
  • Inspects all new residential construction, identifies and investigates unlawful building and zoning activities as well as safety regulations and initiates corrective actions as authorized by City ordinance.
  • Performs life safety inspections on places of assembly, businesses, nursing homes, schools, churches, condominiums and apartments.
  • Calculates the loading of footing capacity while in the field to determine structural adequacy.
  • Evaluates engineering documents and reviews for compliance and installation standards to determine that products are installed per the designer and installation instructions including: appliances, equipment, structural components, and soils
  • Enforces building and zoning ordinances from initial application through project completion, maintaining appropriate files and records throughout the process. 

Must have high school diploma or equivalent and experience in the building trades or inspection and enforcement work. Knowledge of residential building construction materials and methods.  Ability to read and understand plans and specifications and make detailed field inspection; interpret codes with accuracy, and communicate effectively with others.  Certification as a Residential Building Inspector by the International Code Council (ICC) and certification as a Residential Electrical Inspector by the International Code Council (ICC) or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) within one year from date of hire.  Must maintain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Iowa.  Pre-employment drug screen and physical required.

Salary range for this position is $55,499-$74,479 annually plus excellent benefits.
