THE POSITION
Under general supervision to inspect buildings, building construction and building reconstruction for compliance with the building code, and other laws and regulations, and to assist and advise the public in matters relating
thereto, and to perform related work as required.
Starting at $27.68 for those WITHOUT Residential or Commercial Building Inspector Certification
Starting at $28.99 for those WITH Residential OR Commercial Building Inspector Certification
Starting at $30.31 for those WITH Residential AND Commercial Building Inspector Certification
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
• Graduation from high school AND
• Either journey person status or equivalent in a building trade OR
• Three years' experience as a general contractor or estimator, OR
• Two years' experience in building inspection work; OR
• Two years of college supplemented by construction or building inspection experience.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.
• Certification as a Residential and Commercial Building Inspector by the International Code Council within two years of appointment. Failure to meet the above noted qualification will result in termination of employment.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
• Makes inspections during the progress of construction, repair, remodeling or erection of buildings to insure compliance with building codes and regulations.
• Reviews building plans and permit applications for code compliance.
• Investigates complaints and makes inspections of existing buildings to determine if hazardous and illegal conditions exist.
• Gives information to builders and others regarding building codes and regulations.
• Prepares written reports; issues notices to correct violations; issues "stop work" notices and testifies in court regarding violations.
SELECTION METHOD
Education & Experience Rating: Applicants meeting the minimum requirements will be evaluated and scored based on demonstrated experience and education. Driving Record Check: Driving records of qualified applicants will be reviewed. Applicants not meeting City driving standards will be eliminated from employment consideration. Those applicants deemed most qualified based on the education and experience rating and review of Driving Record, will be considered for certification to an eligibility list for appointment.
